The first teacher is a parent, or someone who takes that role.
Parenting combines the role of teacher with those of carer and
sustainer, all God-like activities. The fifth commandment
confirms that parents should be honoured in their role as God's
agents. Observing the commandments against idolatry, parents may
rightly receive some of the honour due to God alone, without
incurring the error of idolatry.
Should this honour be given to parents who do not act in the
right way?
Yes. The example of David and Saul indicates that honour should
be given to unrighteous parents.
